Québec 2016

Québec City

In October 2016, Québec City was declared the worldwide cultural destination of the year.  It’s most famous landmark is the Château Frontenac atop the Cap Diamante over the St. Lawrence River.  It is one of a series of chateau-style hotels built by the Canadian Pacific Railway.  The historic old district of Old Québec is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Jacques Cartier tried to establish a settlement on Québec’s location in 1535.  The first permanent settlement was made by Samuel de Champlain in 1608 where the river narrows.  The ramparts built around the old city make it the only fortified city in North America north of Mexico.  It was the birthplace of New France.   Its old world style accents a large metropolitan area.

The Haute-Ville (upper town) is the location of the Cittadelle the British conquered in 1759 during the French-Indian War.  Now government and religious institutions share the fine neighborhoods with  visitors.

The Basse-Ville (lower town) began as a fur-trading post and is near the river.  Its cobblestoned Place Royale is the location of the 17C Notre Dame de Victoires.  Pedestrianized streets, restaurants and shops, and large murals are among its many attractions.

The port of Québec and its facilities are among the sights in the Basse-Ville.  There is an area dedicated to graffiti below the freeways going north from the city.   There is much, much more to see and do in Québec City.

One of the best views of the Château Frontenac is from the lower city.
